August 2009 (09NB-220)
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is seeking public comment on a proposal to allocate a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for the deployment and operation of Medical Body Area Networks (MBANs).
According to a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking adopted by the Commission in late June, MBANs would be used to create wireless body sensor networks around individual patients, in order to monitor a range of physiological data, including temperature, pulse, blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and respiratory function.
Intended for use primarily in health care facilities, MBAN systems could be set up to wirelessly monitor all of the desired data for a single patient, which could then be aggregated and wirelessly transmitted to a separate location for evaluation and further action.
The FCC says that the use of MBAN systems would offer several clinical benefits, including improved patient mobility and comfort, reduced risks of infection, reduced clinical errors, and reduced patient monitoring costs.
Comments on the FCC’s proposed rulemaking are due to the agency by the end of August. The text f the FCC’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding MBANs is available at http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-09-57A1.pdf
